“Daniel’s done an incredible job with the stadium,” Hoddle acknowledged. “The training ground is world-class, and any player would love to train and play in an environment like that. But for me, they’ve gone about it the wrong way.”
Hoddle pointed out that while the state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium generates massive revenue, those funds have not necessarily been reinvested in a way that benefits the team on the pitch.
“The money coming in from that stadium is astonishing, but fans need to know if every penny is being used as a priority for the squad,” he continued. “That should be the focus. Build a squad that matches the ambitions of the stadium. It should have been the squad first, stadium second, but now we need to correct that and make the team the absolute priority.”
Injury Woes and Transfer Discontent
Tottenham’s struggles this season have been exacerbated by a relentless injury crisis, which has significantly weakened Postecoglou’s squad. A staggering 13 league defeats have left Spurs languishing in the bottom half of the table, far below their usual standards.
The January transfer window did little to lift the mood. While Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel arrived on loan, other additions—including Yang Min-Hyeok, Antonin Kinsky, and Kevin Danso—failed to address the club’s glaring weaknesses. Despite the turbulent season, there have been some recent positives. Tottenham’s wins over Brentford, Manchester United, and Ipswich have provided a boost, making them one of the league’s most in-form sides heading into a crucial run of fixtures.
Next up, Spurs face Manchester City, a team they have historically performed well against. Back in November, Postecoglou’s side shocked the footballing world by putting four goals past the reigning champions at the Etihad, dealing a significant blow to Pep Guardiola’s team.
Hoddle believes Spurs’ counter-attacking style is perfectly suited to facing City.
“The reason we do well against Man City is that they dominate possession, forcing us to defend as a unit,” he explained. “We naturally drop deeper, making it harder for them to break us down. In the last game at their place, we hit them on the counter brilliantly. We had the right players to execute the game plan, and we made them pay.”
Reflecting on that performance, he added: “That was as good as Tottenham have played in two seasons. We absolutely put them to the sword that day.”
