The Boston Red Sox have struggled this season. At 34-36, they are nine games back in the American League East.
They had a busy offseason, adding Garrett Crochet, Alex Bregman, Walker Buehler and Aroldis Chapman. But those moves haven’t made them a true contender.
They could certainly use some help with their starting rotation. With the exception of Crochet, the rotation has struggled a bit.
Owen Crisafulli of Clutch Points proposed the idea of Boston making a trade with the Miami Marlins, but not for Sandy Alcantara.
“For the majority of the year, Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins has been regarded as the top starting pitcher set to be available, but he has a 7.14 ERA through 13 starts, which is precisely what this team does not need. The guy Boston should target from Miami instead is Edward Cabrera,” wrote Crisafulli.
Cabrera has put together a respectable season to date with the Marlins. He is 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in 10 starts this season.
He likely won’t cost nearly the same type of haul that Alcantara would, even with the former Cy Young struggling.
When Cabrera is on, he can be a solid strikeout pitcher. He is averaging 9.6 punchouts per nine innings this year with the Marlins.
While the Red Sox are likely out of contention in the AL East, they have a chance in the Wild Card race, as they are just three games out.
Adding Cabrera could significantly bolster the rotation for the stretch run.
We’ll see what Boston decides to do.
