The Boston Red Sox are still in the postseason race, despite some poor play. They are just three games out of an American League Wild Card spot, but could use some more pitching.
Outside of Garrett Crochet, the Red Sox rotation has been inconsistent, to say the least. There should be options available for the Red Sox, but they may not want to pay a premium price for a rental if they are fighting for a wild card spot. Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy suggested the Red Sox trade for Aaron Civale of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon revealed that Civale has requested a trade from the Brewers after they took him out of the rotation.
“Wouldn’t this be funny? Boston seemingly had a surplus of pitching earlier in the season so it traded Quinn Priester to Milwaukee,” wrote McAvoy. “But, the Red Sox have been a team that has already been speculated about ahead of the trade deadline when it has come to adding veteran starting pitching.”
Priester has been great for the Brewers, becoming a piece of their rotation. Civale was moved to the bullpen in favor of the Brewers’ top pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski. He threw five no-hit innings in his debut last night and looked like he could be an electric addition to the Brewers’ rotation.
While speaking with reporters, Civale said he would love to stay in Milwaukee, but as a starter. He and his agent are exploring ways to get him in a starting rotation, whether that be in Milwaukee or somewhere else. The reality is that for him to be a starter with the Brewers, someone would have to get hurt.
Additionally, the Brewers are expecting Brandon Woodruff back at some point, so Civale could once again be moved out of the rotation. Civale has never pitched out of the bullpen in the regular season, but expects to be available on Saturday and will pitch out of the bullpen until his trade request is met.
Civale has a 3.23 ERA since returning from the injured list. However, the Brewers’ surplus of starters has forced him to the bullpen. On the Red Sox, he could join the rotation and be a stable arm behind Crochet as the Red Sox try to make the postseason. Red Sox beat writer, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, noted that Civale could be interested in pitching for the Red Sox. He attended Northeastern University in Boston and was born in Connecticut.
