Mahomes magic, meet Minshew mania.
The Kansas City Chiefs made the move earlier this offseason to get Patrick Mahomes a new backup quarterback, and they opted for a favorite of football fans everywhere, Gardner Minshew.
Minshew and his magnificent mustache began his NFL career in Jacksonville and has also made stops with the Colts and the Raiders.
Now, he takes over for Carson Wentz as the backup to this era’s top QB.
It’s an important role, and it comes with an extra caveat that Chiefs coach Andy Reid is looking forward to.
“He’s been there — he’s started, so he’s got that,” Reid told reporters as the Chiefs wrapped up minicamp. “He’s got the confidence of the guys around him. Patrick knows he’s been in there and done it, so they can bounce things off of each other. It’s always good to have peers that have played, and you can talk to them about it a little bit. I think on gameday he’ll be great with Patrick, just with what he’s seeing from the sideline and what Pat’s seeing when he’s in there.”
Backup QBs are always a quirky thing. Teams don’t actually want them to ever see the field, unless it’s on the positive side of a huge blowout.
At the same time, a team with Super Bowl aspirations like the Chiefs needs a good backup, because you never know when you might need them in a big moment.
If Minshew’s wisdom can help Mahomes even a little bit, it’s worth having him around. The Chiefs certainly seem to think he’ll be the perfect fit.
