At a press conference on Tuesday, Kamara revealed that the money will be used to build a new housing complex that includes 150 permanent supportive housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds for the homeless population in the city. The facility, which will also offer wraparound services such as mental health care, job training, and substance abuse counseling, is set to begin construction later this year.
“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up,” Kamara shared emotionally. “There were nights we struggled, and I never forgot what that felt like. I knew if I ever had the means, I’d give back in a meaningful way. No one deserves to sleep on a sidewalk.”
The donation comes at a critical time for New Orleans, which has seen a sharp rise in homelessness in recent years due to economic instability, housing shortages, and the lasting impacts of natural disasters. Kamara’s contribution is the largest single private donation ever made to a homelessness-focused project in the city.
Kamara is working closely with local nonprofit organizations, housing developers, and the city government to ensure the project is sustainable and impactful. According to city officials, the new shelter and housing units are projected to help over 1,200 people annually.
