Netflix Officially Announces “The Underdog” — A Powerful Rodney Harrison Documentary

Netflix has officially unveiled The Underdog, a captivating new sports documentary set to premiere on August 23, 2025. The film dives deep into the inspiring journey of former NFL star Rodney Harrison — a hard-hitting safety known not only for his ferocious playing style but also for his unwavering determination, leadership, and rise from overlooked prospect to football greatness.

Produced by NFL Films in collaboration with Netflix Sports, The Underdog offers an unfiltered look at Harrison’s life both on and off the gridiron. From his humble beginnings in Markham, Illinois, to his standout years with the San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots, the documentary traces how Harrison carved out a legacy through grit, heart, and an underdog mentality that defined his career.

The film features exclusive interviews with Harrison himself, along with commentary from legendary figures like Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Tony Dungy, and former teammates such as Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau. It also includes never-before-seen locker room footage, archived game highlights, and personal moments that reveal the man behind the helmet.

Harrison, a two-time Super Bowl champion and the first NFL player to record both 30 sacks and 30 interceptions, has long been viewed as one of the most underrated yet impactful safeties in NFL history. Despite going in the fifth round of the 1994 NFL Draft, he proved critics wrong year after year with his fearless play, relentless work ethic, and leadership on two dynastic Patriots defenses.

“I wasn’t supposed to make it — not to the league, not to the Patriots, not to the Hall of Fame conversation,” Harrison says in the trailer. “But that’s the story of my life — being counted out and proving people wrong.”

Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Andre Gaines, The Underdog promises a raw, emotional, and ultimately triumphant narrative that sheds light on Harrison’s struggles, triumphs, and the chip-on-the-shoulder mentality that drove him to greatness.

The documentary will be available for streaming globally on Netflix starting August 23.

Fans of football, perseverance, and stories of true grit won’t want to miss this powerful tribute to a player who redefined toughness — and earned every bit of respect the hard way.
