Since being drafted, Matthew Golden has been the most talked-about rookie selected by the Packers. He had a strong showing at rookie minicamp and OTAs. Known as one of the fastest players in college, Golden’s speed is something Packers fans can look forward to seeing on the field. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer highlighted Golden’s early impact, noting that he’s performing so well it could even lead to a trade at the wide receiver position.
“The Packers picked the fastest receiver in the draft, Matthew Golden, and early returns from Green Bay say the rookie’s overall athleticism has already shown up,” Breer wrote. “It’ll be interesting to see whether a veteran receiver shakes free in a trade based on Golden’s development.”
Golden has already shown confidence beyond his years, making it clear that his sights are set on winning it all this season.
“Definitely want to go get that [Lombardi] trophy, man,” Golden told KPRC’s Aaron Wilson. “That’s the question mark we got in our team room is just filling in that blank. That’s the last thing we need in that team room and, for us, that’s all we talk about at practice is getting that trophy.”
Golden’s quick rise is somewhat unusual for the Packers, who typically allow rookies — even first-rounders — time to develop before stepping into starting roles. But Golden’s performance has made him impossible to ignore. He’s also showing a mature approach by seeking feedback from the defensive backs he faces in practice.
“Golden added that he engages in conversation with the defensive backs after plays, looking for feedback on what they think he might’ve done better. Sometimes it’s part of the smack talk right after a competitive rep, others it’s later, off to the side,” Packers.com’s Mike Spofford wrote.
This is a veteran-like move, demonstrating Golden’s willingness to be coached by more experienced teammates. Many rookies take lost reps personally rather than viewing them as opportunities to improve. The Packers appear to have found not just an explosive athlete in Golden, but a mature, coachable player who is already preparing himself for a major role in Week One.
