Former England international and pundit Carlton Palmer has suggested that Sheffield United would significantly boost their chances of winning the Championship title if they could secure the loan signings of Southampton duo Ben Brereton Diaz and James Bree. While Palmer sees these potential additions as game-changers, he urged caution, advocating for loan deals instead of permanent transfers due to the players’ struggles in the Premier League.
Sheffield United endured a nightmare campaign in the Premier League last season, which led to their relegation, but the Blades are showing signs of a rapid resurgence. Under the leadership of Chris Wilder, who returned to the club for a second spell, Sheffield United have managed to bounce back impressively. Their 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Bramall Lane marked a 10-game unbeaten streak and solidified their position at the top of the Championship table, three points ahead of second-placed Leeds United.
Adding to the optimism, a long-awaited takeover by investors Steve Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy is reportedly on the verge of completion. This injection of new ownership is expected to give Wilder the financial backing needed to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window. According to football journalist Alan Nixon, two prime targets for the Blades are Brereton Diaz and Bree, both of whom currently find themselves out of favour at Southampton.
Brereton Diaz, the Chilean striker, enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Bramall Lane in the latter half of last season. He scored six goals and contributed one assist in 16 appearances, making a strong impression. However, a permanent deal did not materialise as Brereton Diaz moved to Southampton for a reported fee of around £7 million over the summer. Unfortunately, the move hasn’t worked out for him. The striker has failed to find the net in 12 appearances for the Saints, and his last start came in mid-September. His limited game time suggests Southampton might be open to letting him leave on loan.
James Bree, a versatile defender, joined Southampton from Luton Town in January 2023 but has struggled to make a consistent impact. So far this season, Bree has made just six appearances across all competitions, though he has managed to score twice in the EFL Cup. Despite his potential, he has yet to establish himself as a first-team regular at St. Mary’s.
In an exclusive interview with Football League World, Palmer explained why these two players could be valuable additions to Sheffield United’s promotion push. He praised Wilder’s current management and the team’s form but highlighted that bolstering the squad with experienced Championship players could make a crucial difference.
“Sheffield United are linked with a double swoop for Ben Brereton Diaz and James Bree,” Palmer said. “Chris Wilder’s side are three points clear at the top of the table and going great guns. They have two loan spots available in January, and Wilder is keen to utilise that. Hopefully, the new owners can finalise the takeover in time to make these moves happen.”
Palmer was clear in his assessment of the duo’s struggles at Southampton: “Brereton Diaz had a successful loan spell at Bramall Lane last season. He earned a move to Southampton, but it hasn’t worked out for him or James Bree. The managerial change at Southampton adds a layer of uncertainty. The new manager may want to keep these players around, but if Sheffield United can secure them on loan, it would be a huge boost.”
However, Palmer cautioned against making permanent signings for now. “The only concern is that they’ve struggled in the Premier League. It’s understandable that Sheffield United would want to pursue loan deals until the end of the season. Promotion is the priority. Bringing them in on loan would make United clear favourites not just for promotion, but for winning the league outright.”
If Brereton Diaz returns to Sheffield United, his presence would alleviate the pressure on the current attacking options, including Tyrese Campbell, Kieffer Moore, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, and Gustavo Hamer. His Championship experience, especially his prolific stint with Blackburn Rovers, makes him an ideal addition. Yet, questions remain about his ability to deliver in the Premier League, reinforcing the logic behind a temporary deal.
On the defensive front, while United already have Alfie Gilchrist and Femi Seriki in the right-back position, Bree’s arrival would provide valuable depth for the demanding second half of the season.
