BIG TRANSFER UPDATE-Tottenham responds to Cristian Romero interest from Real Madrid
Tottenham Hotspur have made it clear they are not open to any offers for their star center-back Cristian Romero, despite Real Madrid’s renewed interest in securing the Argentine’s services, according to sources close to Football Insider.
Romero, a 26-year-old World Cup winner, has long been on Real Madrid’s radar, with the Spanish giants viewing him as an ideal addition to strengthen their backline. The urgency to sign a new center-back has only intensified at the Santiago Bernabeu after Eder Militao, one of Madrid’s key defenders, suffered a serious knee injury that will keep him sidelined for an extended period. Additionally, David Alaba is also unavailable due to a knee issue, leaving Real Madrid short on options in central defense.
Nevertheless, Tottenham remain steadfast in their stance, insisting that Romero is not for sale. Spurs are determined to retain the Argentine defender, who has become a crucial part of their defense since his arrival. Rather than entertaining offers, Tottenham are reportedly focused on bolstering their own defensive depth in the upcoming January transfer window, aiming to reinforce rather than weaken their squad.
Romero, who joined Tottenham in 2022, is under contract until June 2027. Despite speculation surrounding his future, the club is in no hurry to offer an extension, having secured his services for the foreseeable future. So far this season, the 39-cap Argentina international has made 11 appearances across all competitions, though he has been given rest in certain Europa League fixtures to manage his workload.
Tottenham’s defensive line has been further tested recently with Micky van de Ven sidelined due to a hamstring injury. However, the Dutch center-back is expected to return after the international break, easing some of the pressure on Ange Postecoglou’s defensive unit. In his absence, new recruit Radu Dragusin has filled in, although his performances have been somewhat inconsistent, contributing to Tottenham’s recent defensive struggles. Veteran defender Ben Davies is also available as a central option, though his involvement in the Premier League this season has been limited to just 29 minutes.
Currently, Tottenham find themselves in 10th place in the league following a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Ipswich on Sunday, November 10. Postecoglou’s side will be eager to rebound from this setback, especially with the prospect of key players like Van de Ven returning soon, potentially stabilizing the defense and helping the team push for a stronger league position.
