West Ham United appear poised to part ways with Guido Rodríguez, despite the midfielder having spent less than a year at the London Stadium. The Argentine World Cup winner arrived in East London on a free transfer from Real Betis under former manager Julen Lopetegui, but his time in claret and blue has been far from a success.
Rodríguez was expected to bring experience and solidity to West Ham’s midfield, but the 30-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a key figure in the first team. His performances have failed to justify a regular starting role, and with Graham Potter now at the helm, his prospects of turning things around look bleak.
Now, a return to Spain appears to be on the cards, with former club Real Betis reportedly interested in taking him back. And while West Ham may have acquired Rodríguez on a free transfer, they are still looking to secure a decent fee for him, with a £10 million price tag being floated.
Hammers Set Asking Price as Betis Circle
Despite his struggles in England, Rodríguez remains a respected player in Spain, and a move back to La Liga could be the best option for all parties. West Ham, keen to trim their squad and refine Potter’s vision, are not expected to stand in his way—provided their financial demands are met.
Former Leicester City and Brentford boss Martin Allen believes a £10 million offer could be enough to persuade the Hammers to cash in. Speaking to West Ham Zone, Allen suggested that Rodríguez’s departure is inevitable given the direction Potter wants to take the squad.
“If they could get £10 million, bring him in and move him on already,” Allen said. “I don’t think he’s happy, and Potter seems set on bringing in an English or British core to his side. If they could get £10 million from a free transfer, they would be absolutely delighted.
“I would think West Ham will want to move him on, and the player will probably want to be leaving, so that suits both parties. If they can get that fee, it would be a positive piece of business.”
Rodríguez No Longer Needed as West Ham Reshape Midfield
With the midfield hierarchy becoming increasingly clear under Potter, Rodríguez’s chances of playing a meaningful role seem to be dwindling. The return of James Ward-Prowse from his loan at Nottingham Forest further limits his opportunities, while Edson Álvarez has firmly established himself as the club’s first-choice defensive midfielder.
Moreover, Potter has shown confidence in young prospect Lewis Orford, preferring to give the academy graduate opportunities rather than turn to Rodríguez. That decision speaks volumes about the Argentine’s standing within the squad.
Ultimately, with better options available and a potential £10 million payday on the table, West Ham appear ready to offload Rodríguez in the summer. If a deal can be struck at the right price, the club’s hierarchy—led by David Sullivan—would have little reason to stand in the way of his departure.
