The Detroit Lions didn’t show much faith in backup quarterback Hendon Hooker last season after bringing in veteran Teddy Bridgewater to serve as Jared Goff’s backup during the playoffs.
This offseason, the team added veteran Kyle Allen, who will give Hooker some competition for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart ahead of his third season.
With the Lions having Super Bowl aspirations, you can never have a good enough insurance policy at the most important position in the sport, which is why one analyst thinks it’s possible Detroit could trade for more help.
In the opinion of CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin, the Lions are a potential landing spot for Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis, who could get traded this offseason.
Drafted in the second round in 2023, Levis showed a ton of promise in his first year with his impressive arm strength and mobility, and it looked like he’d be the future in Tennessee.
However, 2024 went much differently, as Levis struggled with his decision-making, which led to countless back-breaking turnovers that eventually got him benched.
The Titans are clearly done with the Levis experiment after drafting Cam Ward at No. 1 overall in April, and it’s only a matter of time before Levis is moved.
One thing the Lions can offer Levis if he ever sees the field is a better situation around him.
Granted, Levis certainly wasn’t blameless in his struggles, but tennessee was sorely lacking both playmakers and a strong offensive line last season, two things the Lions don’t have issues with.
Adding Levis into the mix gives the Lions another backup option with experience to challenge Allen and Hooker, and maybe Detroit finds a diamond in the rough with the once-promising signal-caller.
With Levis’ stock in the toilet and the entire world knowing the Titans will trade him at some point, it shouldn’t cost more than a late Day 3 pick to bring him in.
For a little extra security at quarterback, it would be worth taking a flyer on the Kentucky product.
