The Boston Red Sox had a busy offseason, signing Alex Bregman, Aroldis Chapman and Walker Buehler while trading for Garrett Crochet.
However, the team has struggled this season. As June gets underway, the Red Sox are 29-33 and nine games back in the American League East.
As a result, we could potentially see the Red Sox sell some pieces. They have plenty of players on expiring contracts.
Interestingly enough, Jeff Passan of ESPN believes that Boston could send Buehler back to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“They saw last year what Buehler turns into in October. The four shutout innings against the Mets. Five more against the Yankees. And then the final three outs to lock down the World Series title. Any sort of reunion would necessitate a Red Sox collapse, and as bad as they look right now, that’s premature,” Passan writes.
The Dodgers have a deep farm system, so Boston could take their pick with what prospects they want in exchange in a potential deal.
Buehler missed much of 2024 due to injuries and struggled, going 1-6 with a 5.38 ERA. But he salvaged the season with a strong postseason performance.
This season, he’s 4-3 with a 4.44 ERA in nine starts with the Red Sox. If last year was any indication, rental pitchers will bring back solid returns for selling teams.
If the Red Sox sell, Buehler could be an ideal trade candidate as the deadline approaches. It will all depend on if they can turn their season around soon.
