Mac Jones was passed over once by the 49ers in the 2021 draft.
The next time they had the chance, San Francisco scooped up the quarterback.
Jones is slated to be backup to Brock Purdy, who signed a five-year, $265 million deal in the offseason.
This comes a few years after head coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers passed over Jones, taking Trey Lance third overall. Jones went 15th to the New England Patriots, before heading to Jacksonville, and now is with San Francisco.
The quarterback was asked if he addressed the situation with Shanahan and retorted with a sarcastic quip.
History aside, Jones has said the fit with the 49ers works best for him at this stage of his career. He’s been labeled as a backup, but Shanahan has found a way to get the best out of quarterbacks like Jimmy Garappolo and Brock Purdy, who have otherwise flown under the radar.
“This was a really enticing place for me seeing the production that the quarterbacks put out throughout the years in Kyle Shanahan’s offense,” Jones said.
“Obviously watching Brock Purdy from afar and being a fan from afar, just the way he plays the game, very precise, very on time, cerebral. So it’s all those things that I’ve done at some points in my career and I just want to get more consistent at that,” he added.
Shanahan has shown the ability to elevate gunslingers with his style of offense. With a strong running game and creative playcalling, Jones should have the opportunity to shine when he gets in the game.
If he doesn’t, it could prove he’s not starter material.
